What Faith Can Do

“Watch out!” cried Jeremy. A silver Audi sedan with a broken bumper swerved past the double yellow line and right into the way of Jeremy’s van. Panicked, Mr. Chui, his driver quickly maneuvered the silver van into the lane on the right. “That was close!” Jeremy exclaimed as his driver made a U-turn.

However, Mr. Chui remained calm and relaxed. “Don’t worry boy,” Mr. Chui said, “nothing bad will happen to this Buick. A holy man blessed it.”

As they continued on their way to Jeremy’s new school, Jeremy looked at his surroundings. Trees lined both sides of the street. Cars crammed the streets and caused traffic. It was so unlike Tianjin, but Jeremy would have to get used to it.

Mr. Chui parked the van outside the school and smiled at Jeremy. “Wow, what a big school. Well, have a good orientation.” Mr. Chui said as Jeremy stepped out of the Buick and through the school gates.

Jeremy stood in awe as he admired the tall silver building that was the high school. A bridge connected the high school building to the middle school building, which was also silver. Blue windows aligned every floor, and it was a magnificent sight for Jeremy. He recalled that his previous school in Tianjin only had one tiny building that all the students were crammed into.

As Jeremy walked towards the high school building, he noticed an electronic bulletin board that read, “Welcome new students to Shanghai International School. We hope that you will have a great time during this orientation.”

The wind billowed at Jeremy’s black shirt, and his long blue jeans touched the floor as he walked. He stopped to push his green and silver glasses tightly against his nose and then continued to walk.

Posted on the door to the high school building, was a sign that read, “All new students are to report to room H21.” Jeremy pushed open the door and admired the interior of the building. The white marble floor shined brightly, and the entire place was extremely clean. Jeremy found the directory and made his way to room H21.

As all the students found a place to sit, a tall man with blonde hair and hazel eyes walked towards the wooden podium. His red tie flapped against his white shirt as he walked. His long black trousers touched the ground, covering his shoes. The man adjusted the microphone and then announced, “Hello everyone, my name is Dr. Finimore, and I am your head of school. Welcome to Shanghai International School, or as some people call it, SIS. I want all of you to know that we don’t want SIS just to be a school to you, but to also be your home. We want you to enjoy your studies here and have a great time. And just to let you know, our school theme this year is “joy,” so I want you all to have a joyful year.
